We wanted to figure out a way to visualize music using the sky. The problem was that the song was about three minutes long, and we were tired of seeing fake, touched-up stuff everywhere. So we shortened our song to fit within the amount of time it would take the sun to pass from the horizon to the top of the camera frame. We made an instrument on the computer to play us musical tones from a speaker to help us know what part of the song we were on, and trained for about 3 weeks. We decided to shoot in photo bursts to give the video an eyesight-like look without the sun blowing it out and without the use of digital enhancement. The saturated look of the image is the result of stacking 3 pictures over each other -- dark, medium, light -- taken in bursts by the camera while we acted still. Shooting 3 weeks, 1/2 a gallon of gas, and 3 potty breaks... We filmed by Panther Beach in Santa Cruz, California. You can get to it only by climbing down a cliff and going through a hole in a rock and when the tide comes in it fills the hole in the rock so we had trapped ourselves. The original idea was to trap ourselves and have the video end with us wading in the water but we had to move back on the beach for safety from the waves. We brought water and took breaks to drink and urinate, which appear as skips in the video. It looks warm in the picture but it got cold and windy so we stuffed instant heat pads in our armpits. You can see Paul trying to hold one that started creeping out at the end... dave's flow ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On September 28 Paul Rose and I spent a day on the beach acting out a musical performance we had been practicing 3 weeks before. We had written a new piece of software to play us tones every 6 seconds when we had to move on to the next frame and the music we recorded a few days earlier. We attached the software to a Canon 7D camera via a computer and a gas generator, which took many series of 3 pictures in varying brightness while we held still. the ~6000 pictures were combined later in order to produce what you see here. My drum part I recorded about one semitone faster than real-time because I realized while practicing that in order to play the same beat for a long time I had to increase and decrease the pitch in sort of a sine wave like pattern. So I recorded it at a faster tempo and then slowed it down on the computer. I think the result is that the drums sound more like the keyboard part. Also, we did some Lip syncing in Hd/Full screen. That's it d www.facebook.com/paulrosedavidrosemusic http://TheRoseBrothers.com Economy's on the down-side Looking for an up-side Walking on the high-tide Turnin on the bright side Change happens real slow Comes up on you quickly One minute we're healthy The next minute we're sickly The next minute YOU'RE DEAD where did all the time go Amen to the young, Welcome to the old, yo Young and old and young and old and As the days go by The waves are rolling in The tide is on the rise To bring new life again The foam is rolling out -- The waves are rolling in (the waves are rolling in) the waves are rolling in theearthisturning....
